It has the capability to clamp onto your grill or you can use the 3 magnets in the base like I do. The magnets have not marred the top surface of my smoker either. The magnets are strong enough to securely hold the light on, but not so hard that it cannot be easily removed.
I rated this 4-stars for 3 reasons:
1) The light is not spread around very wide, nor is its range very far; it is kind of a spotlight effect which is to be expected from the rather narrow head. I had to move the flexible neckor remove it from the top of the smoker to use it handheld flashlight style to see the various parts of what was in my smoker (Bradley OBS). My grill is large so I figure that I will have to do the same thing or buy a second one & put one on each side.
2) For 6 LED lights I do not think that it is very bright, but I also had the porch light on & was using it to peer through smoke from the smoker so that may have affected my judgement of its brightness. I may edit this rating later after testing it on my grill with the porch light off.
3) The batteries are held in a cage with 2 of them pointed in one direction & the third pointed in the opposite direction. Be very careful that you install them in the correct directions. There are arrows with a battery diagram to show how to install the batteries in the specific slots. This is actually my biggest complaint about this item, but it does work. Most battery items I have ever seen have the batteries installed all in the same direction.
I do like this item & feel that it is worth the money overall. Just becareful when installling the batteries, though.
